Home Treatments for Freckles

Freckles can be either a cute personal feature or on the contrary, a nightmare when their number exceeds a certain limit. The majority of people who develop freckles wish to have the opportunity to get rid of them without having to turn to expensive and complicated procedures. Fortunately there are several natural options that have proven to be effective for getting rid of freckles.

About freckles

Freckles are tiny brown spots that can develop on various parts of the body, predominantly on the face, chest and shoulders. Freckles are caused by a conglomeration of melatonin in certain spots. While freckles can develop regardless of a person's genetic background they are more likely to develop on those who are naturally blonde or redheaded and that have a fair complexion due to the fact that they less melatonin in their skin.

While some might naturally get rid of freckles after puberty when the body can produce more melatonin, some will continue to have this problem trough adulthood as well. Freckles can be genetically inherited but sun exposure is the ultimate factor that increases the chances of developing freckles. While simple freckles can be an upsetting problem, they are not considered a skin disorder and do not pose any health risks. On the other hand, freckles developed because of excessive sun exposure can raise the risk of developing melanoma.

Preventing freckles can be tricky for those who have a genetic predisposition and can only try to avoid making the problem worse. The main defense against developing freckles is adequate sun protection. Using a sunscreen with a solar protection factor of 30+, avoiding tanning beds, wearing a broad hat as well as avoiding sun exposure during peak hours are the main things that can be done to prevent freckles.

As far as treatment options are concerned, there are different approaches that can be applied. Bleaching creams that contain hydroquinone can cause the freckles to fade over time. Chemical peels are another option that can temporarily cause minor improvements.

Laser or pulsed light therapy can offer the best results over time but they tend to be quite expensive. A full face treatment can cost up to 1000$ per session and 1 to 3 sessions are required for best results. The most inexpensive method of removing freckles is by using homemade remedies.
